The Back Garden Nursery Dairy 2011.

Monday 7th March.

I would of started this earlier...well I have on my other blog, but thought I'd have a blog just for the nursery instead....

So far I've been very busy sowing seeds for the vegetable plot and flower bed as I try to grow all my own vegetables  throughtout the year and have all my own cut flowers throughout the summer...

So today out on the nursery haas been busy for me, I've sowed a few more seeds and potted up 30 tiny aquiliegia plants that I found growing in a large pot, they are seeds from one of my well grown aquilegias the only things is I will not know what colour flowers they'll be possily not until next year as I don't think they will grow quick enough to flower this year  although I may just be wrong...I'll have to wait and see anyway I've called the "Townfields Mix" after a road near where the nursery is...I like finding plants like that...

I've re-taken some cuttings today that will be going inthe new greenhouse on Thursday when I get it built up...

I had to do quite a bit of watering too, I didn't quite early on as I had a feeling it would freeze tonight and it has...If you water to late the water droplets don't have time to soak into the root and soil then freeze on the plant and this can kill it, which is not what I wont to happen...As I do put rather alot of time in to growing all these plants...

Tomorrow I a taking a trip to one of my favorite nurseries in Cheshire called Bridgemere garden world it's about 15 miles away from where we live so we'll make a day of it....

John is very good at making me items for the nursery we built the greenhouses that are already up and he's busy making me a few coldframes at the moment Which I do need very soon, for getting the vegetable plants ready for growing out side....

I'm very lucky that I have had such a great time learning how to grow plants I have a vast range of knowledge of how to grow so mant different types of plants...

Anyway I will let you know how we get on tomorrow no doubt I'll come back with yet more plants to grow and propagte from..I usually do when I've been out to most garden centres and other nurseries...epecially if it's something new or if I haven't tried them before....

Lady Sarah.

I just been outside it's freezing cold -3 already I was hoping we were not going to get to many more really cold nights...I just went to check that all the plants that need covering up and they were all fine I put another layer of bubble wrap over them it really does help.

It is a very good investment as well as protection fleece I couldn't do without that at this time of year...

Anyway I'm off up to bed soon as I do have a very busy day tomorrow....
Good night or good morning all where ever you may be in the world...Sweet dreams. Lady Sarah.

Well it's been a very busy day for us all...we didn't get to bridgemere today but we will be going in the next couple of weeks, we just ran out of time....
But i did manage to get quite a few bits for the nursery...I got some mixed hanging basket seeds and a few extra vegetable seeds some purple sprouting brocolli which does grow very well up here... I got a nother type of tomato seed and 15 geranium seedlings I also got another propergating tray and some proper jute string which is very useful for making bean frames and training plants as well it take years to rot but is bio-degradeable as it is a natural product...

I didn't manage to get my new greenhouse either, that's coming next week now as the shop waas out of stock...

So Thursday is going to be a very busy day out on the nursery with poting up and sowing more seeds...

    What a windy day...
Well I was going to spend a bit of time out on the nursery this morning but at the moment it is just a bit to windy to be out there....
So I'm staying indoors for now...I've been sorting out my seeds there are so many and I bought another 5 packets yesterday...

I got some new perpetual spinach seeds and some more tomato garten perle seeds some purplr sprouting broccoli seeds and some enorma runner beans which are so easy to grow...I also bought a pack of 6 different hanging basket and tub seeds as I always grow all my own bedding plants too...

So I hope that later on today I'll get out there in the potting shed and get some of these seeds sown as it's about the right time of year to start them off....So that's about it for the diary so far today...Lady Sarah.

What a windy day and cold too....
We haven't any snow yet although we may just get a bit....
I've just had a quick look around the nursery everything is ok It was quite cold here last night but we did not get any frost...

All the new seeds are now settled in there seed trays...So i'll have to keep checking them for any signs of germination in the next few days...

Today I'm going to be designing a new sign for the nursery and some matching description labels for the plants... I'mgoing to try and get out on the nursery later to sow some purple sprouting broccoli seeds and spinach seeds as they can go straight outside in the ground now as the soil will be warm enough for them to germinate in now...

Everything in the greenhouse is doing really well and growing well...So I should have plenty to plant in the next few weeks...

I've had quite a good afternoon I managed to order some more seeds form ebay, it's a good place to find all sorts of seed...
I've ordered a few more rare plant seeds and some more unusual vegetable seeds on being the swan necked gourd.. Well it looked interesting to me... I've also found a lettuce that I was looking for called tom thumb it's a small loose leaved type and can be grown in smaller gardens and vegetable patches..
So I've quite enjoyed looking for them...They should be here within a few days so no doubt I'll be busy again sowing and growing these new plants...I'm also looking to get a few different bamboos to grow as I really like all types of bamboos and grasses...
Got to go npw as Edward has just woken up... Lady Sarah.

  7. Friday 11th March.

It's been quite a nice morning here in Cheshire UK. But now it has gone cold and cloudy again..
I had a walk in to town with Edward this morning.

We picked up a few new plants for the nursery this morning...I bought 3 solidago plants and 3 alchemilla molis plants and I also managed to get some curly kale seeds and some verbena bonariensis seeds for my borders...as they grow quite tall and will grow well at the back of my borders and will help fill in some of the gaps...
So this afternoon I'm going to go out and pot up the new plants and sow some of the new seeds...

I've also noticed that the calendula seeds which I sowed last week have germinated in the propagator so I have taken them out and put them on the windowsill to grow a bit bigger before I pot them up...

So that's about it for now, all is well out on the nursery.....Hope you all have a good day where ever you are...Lady Sarah.

There's a beautiful blue hyacith in flower in the greenhouse the scent is fantastic and I now have 3 small Acer trees which have germinated over the past few weeks...So they will need poting on very soon in another couple of weeks I think....
There are still lots of snowdrops and a beautiful purple hellebore out in flower in the main border and the contorted willow is just about to produce it's catkins...and I also have a few daffodils out and the tulips are getting ready to flower soon as well, they are another of my very favorite plants...

I've had a very busy afternoon in the nursery.I have sown my purple chilli seeds which I collected last year they were just perfect for sowing...So they are now in the heated propagator and should take around 7-10 days to start germinating... The onw thing I have noticed that has germinated in there is my nicotinia seeds again these are very tiny seedlings at the moment so I will leave them to grow on for a few more days before they are ready for pricking out...I have pricked out the tagetes seeds there were 96 seedlings all together they filled up a full cell tray and have now got a space made for them in the greenhouse too...I also propagated 3 heathers using layering as there method of propagation as that usually works really well for me...I also potted up 6 small tomato plants and 6 little chiili plants I got the other day from the diy store which they had reduced to 10 pence each I bought 10 and got 14 plant out of them as several had 2 plants in there pots I also got a coupole of melons too...
So yes I have had a very busy afternoon today...

Not a busy start to the day on the nursery, but my Mediterranean mixed begetable seeds have arrived so I will be out there shortly getting some of them sowed...The Aubergine and oregano are going to be first I think...And I have yet another variety if tomato to grow this one is a plum type San Marzano I have heard of these before and they are quite tasty and juicy...

I was also given some tomato Alicante seeds this weekend which are again good for growing out doors best grown in the vegetable boxes but I will have to have mine in a large pot as now there is definately no space in any of the other vegetable boxes...

Good news is I will be getting another 2 vegetable boxes later this week and the new small greenhouse arrives tomorrow..so I will have fun putting that up although I might wait until John gets in to help me...
I have got to make some space for the new greenhouse this afternoon....I need to move about 20 plants from the small polytunnel up to the nursery tables..They will be ok out there now as they have been in the cool air for around 2 weeks now....

I have order some more seeds too... some tea seeds and coffee seeds... And a new plant for me called Stevia which has a sweet taste to it's leaves and is now being used to re-place sugar it is said to be sweeter than sugar and have no calories...I like the sound of that....I will have a few of these for sale in the summer..it is a tender perrenial and a herb, it will have to grow indoors during the winter...I also have some peppercorn tree seeds coming which I'm really looking forward to growing...

Some of the seeds are coming from Hong Kong and 1 of the other is coming from USA...They'll be here sometime in the next 2 weeks....Lady Sarah.

The sugar melons have germinated I have 2 out of 10 seeds, which considering that they are 2 year old seeds is not to bad. There may be a few more yet I'll just have to wait and see...The nicotiana seedlings are still much to tiny to prick out as yet but there now growing on the windowsill out of the propagator so they should be ready to prick out at the weekend if i'm here....

My new seed bank should be ready for friday as well...I need one to keep all my hunbdreds of seeds in and there's still more to come....Lady Sarah.

then it started to ran so I spent and hour in the potting shed and green house...I potted up some of my new seedlings of the mina lobata and some of the stevia have grown quite well...
I had to re-pot several of the tomato garten perle as they had already out grown the cell pots so there now in 9cm pots and look quite well in them....I've had a big clearout in the greenhouse too as I needed some more shelf space asap... New greenhouse arrives either tomorrow or thursday...I am so very desperate for it now...

    Firstly Happy Birthday John...

Had quite a nice windy very windy day but no damage out side.

I managed to get out on the urery for a short time this afternoon.I sowed some amaranthus seeds and also my toothache plant seeds which I got last week... The heated propagator is now very full again...in fact almost at bursting point... I have a few new seedlings that have germinated over the last couple of days...more stevia and I also notice that the austrailian pumpkin tree seeds have at last started to grow...they will both need a few extra days in the propagator I also have a good supply of sweet basil and spring onions and
more mixed salad leaves...the italian stripped courgettes are now ready to be potted up in there own pots and so are the pumpkins...
I also bought a new trellis planter yesterday for one of my favorite roses that I was given by my mother..it a fairy rose very delicate pink blosoms and very lightly scented too... Lady Sarah.

Early start...well I couldn't get settled last night so I've decided to get up early...very early....

It's still a bit windy out there but quite warm.
Last night I built the new trellis box for my rose and I will be planting it up later on today.

I've not checked the seedlings this morning but I'm sure there'll all be ok and have grown a little more over night.

Today I will be potting up the italian stripped courgettes and the pumpkins seedlings and hopefuly a couple of the stevia seedlings too...
They will have to come back inside to grow for a while as they are a little bit tender to go outside just yet, they can spend the summer out there but will have to be moved back in, in September before the frost starts again...
The coffee beans are still ok as I checked them the other day no rottting or growth as yet.. I am still waiting for the tea seeds to arrive..They might just come today... I have ordered a laburnum bonsi kit to see how they will grow and I have a few other bits for the nursery coming too, labels and pots...Lady Sarah.

What a really nice day still a bit windy but rather warm...I've been busy painting my new rose planter and re did a few pieces of trellis while I was out there, they look much better now.

I potted up a few more herbaceous plants and also weeded the front garden...well most of it...I'll be getting some gravel later to help fill in the holes after the winter as it got a bit muddy and wet out there over winter and it does look a bit of a mess and I would like it to look really nice this summer as it would be better for the image of my nursery as that is clean and getting quite tidy again after the winter....I've had to water loads of seedlings again today as the wind and sunshine has managed to dry them out again...Lots of plants are growing really well now...Lady Sarah.
